About Me

I’m a musician and activist with an extensive portfolio, seeking new opportunities in broadcasting as well as support with ongoing projects in film and literature. I have had numerous articles published on the subjects of sport, music, and politics, have been signed to record labels in LA, London, Paris, and Warsaw, and produced an award-nominated short documentary that was screened in several countries. I have a PhD and am close to finishing my second Masters degree. I have contributed to 3 books in recent years and have 2 of my own close to completion (one of which already has a publishing deal), made a decent attempt at becoming West Yorkshire’s first Mayor and ran against the Prime Minister last year, and as well as making a handful of TV appearances have represented Scotland at age-group level in Rugby League. In 2025 I was an inaugral inductee into the Leeds Goth Hall of Fame.

Music

Here are a few examples of musical output from the last few years: the promo video for 1919’s “Singing to the Universe”, a couple of magazine clippings, and a fan video from last year’s Leipzig show. A couple of stills were re-published in Bizarre magazine (thanks to my sweet style). Last year we did our first shows in New York and Dublin, while we have a steady run of dates through 2025 in the diary. Check out my full discography here.

Politics

In the last few years I’ve probably had more attention for politics than anything else. Then again, I’m only an interesting candidate because I’m in a punk band, so it’s swings and roundabouts really. Still, between running for Mayor and standing against the PM it’s been an interesting few years. The best bit was probably the TV debate - even though nobody watches those things - and people sent me some nice emails. You can watch the whole debate here and there’s a clip below.

Publications

An idea of my written output in the last couple of years… My PhD thesis was “Yorkshire Über Alles: An Ethnography of identity, class, and myth among first-wave Post-Punks” and is available through the Leeds Beckett repository. I’ve recently signed an agreement with Intellect to turn the work into a monograph. The books below contain individual chapters of mine, while journalistic stuff is selectively illustrated. You can see a much more comprehensive account of my written work here.

Sport

Other than music, my greatest loves are football and professional wrestling. I’ve written about both, and am still a keen amateur footballer (vice captain of the B team, don’t you know!) I did always fancy wrestling but barely made it through my first training session, so I like to commentate or MC when I can (see below!) It’s something I’d love to do more of. In football, the most interesting thing I’ve ever done is captain the world-famous Real Gothic FC - an exhibition team than used to close the goth festival in Whitby. There are some French TV clips available in the media archive, while the documentary below manages to capture one of my few career goals! While I was at Bradford Uni this last year I played football and Rugby League, and even turned out for the Scotland student side before signing on for Harrogate for the rest of the season.

Film

I’m in pre-production for my first film in a while. My first documentary short was screened in London, New York, and Cincinnati, picking up a few laurels on the way. The following year I produced a music video for a punk band which ended up with an honourablle mention as a comedy short, but crucially for me I was able to act in a music video for a football song, which is something I’d always wanted to do! I’ve done extras work in the past and I’d be keen to go for some more small acting roles if the opportunity arose.

Current projects

In addition to working on the next 1919 album, I am currently working on film and book projects that help me to explore my roots. My family were Polish Jews, displaced during WW2, but I’m fortunate in that my ancestors are relatively easy to trace as a number were quite prominent at the time. This is especially true of my twice great Grandfather, who was twice elected as deputy mayor of Sanok - a small town in the east of Poland near to Lviv (modern Ukraine).

My film will take me back to Sanok, including the old family home that is now the tourist information centre in the town. One of the surviving artefacts from this generation, I took to be repaired on the BBC’s Repair Shop. This account of the story will help to shape the production of the film, and aired in the latest series in October 2024 (all episodes are on iPlayer and there is a clip in the showreel above).

Finally, my great uncle was one of many Poles that joined the front line after their release from the gulags. He left a diary, which I’ve been editing and having the final chapters translated from Polish. The project is near completion and I’m looking to move towards publication soon.
